Very Inspiring Blogger Award: A lovely reminder of why I blog

First of all, I’d like to say a big “thank you” to Costa Rice Travel Blog for nominating thefriendlygiraffe for this award! I am very touched to be connected with the “Very Inspiring Blogger Award” as inspiring other people (writers, travelers, readers or dreamers) is exactly what this blog was intended to do. Initially, it was to fulfill a void in my own storage of inspiration. I wanted to write about something I loved (actually, I just wanted to write, period) and thus, thefriendlygiraffe was born.

Starting this blog inspired me to get creative about content, put my pen to paper (or fingers to they keyboard) and stay disciplined in updating a growing readership of like-minded individuals wanting to learn about the world outside themselves. In short, receiving a blog for being inspiring simply inspires me to keep writing and reminds me why I started this blog in the first place.

From happy single to sappy wife: why solitude sucks, once you find Mr.Right

One of my favourite movies is “Out of Africa” where a tragically married Meryl Streep (Karen) falls in love with Robert Redford (Denys), a free spirit who is unwilling to settle down, until (spoiler alert) he decides, at the very end, to make his way back to her only to crash his plane en route – devastating! Regardless, one of the best lines in the movie comes near the end of the film, when Redford’s character says, “You ruined it for me you know?”, and Meryl answers: “What?” to which he replies with a defeated look in his eye, “Being alone.” I know, I know… and your point is? I’m getting there, read on.

Serenity in solitude

ARTO-0485After a lovely chat with a friend of mine earlier today, it became suddenly clear how my perspective on solitude and singledom has changed. After five years of being in a committed relationship, I no longer crave downtime. I don’t need time alone to gather my thoughts, and, given the chance, I would always choose to have my husband at home, than away traveling for work, or out with the guys. As the words came out of my mouth, I found myself shaking my head, wondering when the freedom seeking Sagittarius had swapped her bow and arrow for a broom and dustpan? Who am I? I suddenly realized that I’m no longer just a woman, a writer, a traveler, a runner, a friend, a lover, etc. In addition to being all these other things, that I always was, now, I’m also someones wife . Gulp!

The art of small-talk and understanding the Canadian “Eh”

Whenever I’m traveling, I get the same question, over and over again. Why, oh why, do Canadians say Eh? Well, here goes.

We’d like to get to know you, Eh?

For visitors to Canada, how and when to use the Eh can be a tad overwhelming. First of all, let me set a few things straight. No! You aren’t expected to say Eh back to someone if they say Eh to you. No! There isn’t a right answer when you hear Eh being latched on to the end of a sentence! In fact, the use of the Canadian Eh isn’t meant to make you feel uncomfortable at all, but to do the exact opposite. The Canadian Eh is meant to initiate small-talk, a cultural phenomenon native to both the U.S. and Canada. It’s a prompt, a call for affirmation and an opening for strangers, friends and foreigners to join in the conversation.
