Quick Tip #11: Take friends and family along for the adventure!

backpacker-cartoon

One of the hardest things about long-term travel is saying goodbye. Whether you’re the one leaving or the one staying behind, when you’re away from the person or people you love, staying sane can be a challenge. You might not feel it right away, but once in a while, even the most seasoned of travelers have a bad day. And if you’re stuck in a strange city when nostalgia hits, things can look pretty bleak.

Now it goes without saying that an adventure is an adventure because it is full of unexpected mishaps, surprise destinations and random acts of folly. No one expects you to be on your phone all the time, or updating your Facebook status by checking-in at every crossroad. They do however, expect you to touch base when time allows. Unfortunately, and despite the very best of intentions, the spontaneous nature of travel means that it can also be really, really hard to keep in touch.

For your benefit, and that of the people you love, it can be really useful to come up with a routine way of keeping people up to date with where you are, the adventures you’re having and the general on-goings of life on the road. Here are ways to keep in touch with the ones you love while living the dream and discovering the world: Read more »

Beautiful British Columbia: Where to eat (and drink) in Vancouver City (2/3)

Welcome back! Now that we’ve landed in Vancouver and had a bit of fun exploring the city on foot (see “Beautiful British Columbia: Giving Vancouver the run around“), it’s time to fill our bellies with some goodness, Vancouver style.

There are tons of places to enjoy good food and drink in and around Vancouver. While it might make sense to some to divide this post into “coffee”, “food”, and “drink” (the hard stuff), I’m going to write about my favourite hot-spots as they appeared over the course of my trip… because it’s simply more fun to write it that way. Ready? Here we go!

Our Town

First up is the best cup of coffee in town! Okay, I lied. It’s actually the best place to grab the best cup of tea in town. In all truth, I’m not a huge coffee drinker – I just like the idea of “grabbing a coffee” which is really giraffe-speak for tea or espresso-based beverage. In pursuit of this caffeinated experience, I discovered (actually, I was introduced to) a wonderful little coffee shop called Our Town where I enjoyed a smooth, creamy, English Fog (tea-misto) more than once. Not only is this cafe the perfect size to share an intimate meeting over your choice of bevvies, it also hosts really interesting activity-nights like “ukulele night” and “documentary night” – how cute is that?

Blenz

My second favourite place to hang out – and by hang out, I mean work – was Blenz! With free wireless internet available and locations scattered throughout Vancouver, it’s the perfect place to grab a seat, a hot drink and a newspaper and sit down for a solid hour or two. I typed up many an article here and sipped on a number of delicious London Fogs – yes, it appears that was my drink of choice for the entirety of this trip (and I don’t regret it for a second! They’re fabulous).

Living the Pura Vida! 7 days all-inclusive at the Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica (Guanacaste)

Have you ever seen the movie Six Days Seven Nights, starring Anne Heche and Harrison Ford? If you haven’t, where have you been? Seriously! The movie is a fabulous depiction of a pilot and his passenger who get stranded together en route from one island to the next and will have you rolling over in laughter. My point? Well, the movie might have been filmed in Hawaii but when it comes to getting stuck on an island – or in this case a mainland – my vote goes to Costa Rica.

We flew in on boxing day after the Christmas rush, a first for my family but the beginning of what will surely become an annual tradition. Out of Pearson International, we arrived, about six hours later in Liberia, Costa Rica. We flew with Sunwing Vacations – affordable with obvious downfalls like no personal entertainment system and a rather limited selection of food and drink, but hey, the price was right and we got a glass of champagne soon after take-off. Sold! After we pulled in to what was a surprisingly large airport, we made headway to the bus that would drive us the additional 30 minutes to Guanacaste and the Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica. We arrived at sunset to this view of the resort… need I say more?
