This is the continuation of a photo essay documenting my travels through India! Grab a cup of chai and join me on my journey… don’t forget to visit the Taj Mahal and the ceremony at Wagah while you’re here!
Welcome to Amritsar. Amritsar will forever be, for me, the most colourful of places I visited during my time in India. It also has a special place in my heart because, in Amritsar, I tasted my first cup of Masala Chai. With a creamy richness and delicate spice, Masala Chai was a comfort and a companion in a foreign land. It tasted every bit as delicious as I had hoped and with every sip, the mystique and magic of India flowed gently through me. Of course, mid way through my cup, a rat came out from under the table and muddled everything up, but still, for the five minutes beforehand as I nibbled on naan and sipped my way into oblivion, I was the happiest girl in the world.
Perhaps (okay, most definitely) more relevant than my first experience with Masala Chai is the fact that Amritsar is home to the Harmandir Sahib – the Golden Temple – and the spiritual and cultural center of the Sikh religion. There was so much about the Golden Temple that left me speechless; from the contrast of the clean white floors and buildings to the beautiful colours of turbans and clothing worn by those partaking in religious rituals and cleansing, to the temple itself which shone like a beacon of peace and serenity. Amritsar is truly a holy place and an incredible experience for anyone seeking further understanding of the Sikh religion.
What a beautiful place. I love the colors!
