Before I had a baby, I remember looking at other parents thinking “what the hell are they doing?”, acting as if I had a clue about how to parent and totally disillusioned as to how much control I had over a little being a quarter my size. I didn’t enter into motherhood with a plan; I wasn’t keen on reading hundreds of books, my labour plan consisted of one sentence that said “do not show me the epidural needle”, and I insisted on keeping an open mind – whatever will be, will be, and that sort of thing. I had always said that I would love to try breastfeeding (when else do you have liquid enough to sustain another human being? I mean, how cool is that?), but if it didn’t work, I wasn’t opposed to switching to formula. The thing about motherhood is that regardless of how you envision your approach, things never quite work out according to plan.

Today, for the second time this week, my afternoon snack consisted of a bag (not a handful, a bag) of mini-eggs and a strong cup of tea. I figure I deserve it, what with a 6 month old baby keeping me on my toes every minute of every day. Plus it’s better than diving into that bottle of wine sitting on the counter, right? Admittedly, I’ve always been a “three o’clock in the afternoon” sugar-kick kind of gal, but when Easter season comes hopping around the corner, my chocolate quota seems to sky rocket and all attempts at healthy-eating fly straight out the window.
